Crossword Puzzles as a Safety Training Activity

In case you are wondering why I like crossword puzzles as a safety training activity, it’s for several reasons:

1- Most people are familiar with crossword puzzles and may even do them for fun and often, these trainees rarely even have to be told to start working on a puzzle.

2- Crossword puzzles can act as a pre-class evaluation. If trainees work on a puzzle when they enter the room and have difficulty thinking of answers, you will quickly know where to spend more time and where to spend less.

3-Crossword activities can be worked on as a team.

4-Crossword activities can be made as challenging as you like.

5-Crossword puzzles can be used as an end of class quiz disguised as a game. No one likes to be tested and puzzles can be used as a way to test knowledge without the added pressure.

The downside, and one you should pay attention to if you have trainees with low levels of English skills, is that the puzzles may be difficult to complete if trainees have difficulty reading and/or writing. There may be a way around this with the use of images but that is obviously more challenging to create.

If you haven't tried puzzles as an evaluation method, give then a try and you will be pleased with the results.

By the way, if you are not yet a subscriber of The Safety Training Net, you can find the Dust Explosion Prevention Crossword Activity shown, in the January 2025 issue.
