How and Why to Remove Backgrounds

When using images in workplace training materials, it is important to only show images that are important to the trainee learning the material. Extra, or decorative items, can be distracting. They also increase the cognitive load (i.e., the amount of work the brain must do).

One way to minimize distractions is to remove unnecessary elements from the background. While this is not always possible, several online tools make it easier to do so. The image shown above was found on the free image website Unsplash and then uploaded to Canva (one of my all time favorite sites for creating training materials). Once I added the image to a document in Canva, I simply selected “edit photo” and then “background remover.” If you try this, the new image can then be downloaded and used where needed.

Other background image remover tools include:

PowerPoint (go to “Picture Format” then “Remove Background”)

Make Your Safety Training Stick! Increase Retention and Get Better Results by Linda Tapp is now available on Amazon and through the ASSP Bookstore.

Safety training is only effective as long as it is remembered and put into action. Make Your Safety Training Stick explains and demonstrates proven methods for helping trainees to remember more of what they learn. Unlike other training, the results of ineffective delivery of safety and health information can result in serious accidents or worse. For this reason alone, safety trainers need to know how to ensure their training is remembered and ultimately used in the workplace so everyone can work more safely.

The techniques covered in this book can be used within any industry and by anyone responsible for creating and delivering safety training. The methods presented are flexible and can be adapted to any audience regardless of educational level or industry. Trainees will no longer dread attending safety training classes, and trainers can be confident that their training efforts are making a difference.
