What We Can Learn From Past Presidents
It's President's Day!
Last year, I delivered a presentation titled "Presidential Leadership and ASSP's CLEAR Values" at the ASSP New England Chapter Professional Development Conference. This presentation aimed to tie ASSP's CLEAR values (detailed below) with quotes from past presidents. ASSP members and non-members alike can learn from these words from the past.
ASSP's CLEAR values stand for Community, Leadership, Excellence, Accountability, and Respect.
- Community: Building networks and fostering collaboration, because as JFK reminded us, service to others strengthens us all .
Professional organizations are built on the power of community.
2. Leadership: Empowering others through integrity and action, supporting growth through scholarships and mentorship. Every professional can support their profession by giving back - not just financially but through efforts to mentor others.
3. Excellence: Pursuing the highest standards in safety practices and professional development. Professionals know that to stay at the top of their game, they need to be continuously learning. This may mean taking control of your own professional development. The "2025 Upskilling Wheel" included in the January issue of The Safety Training Net provides suggestions for areas to investigate further.
4. Accountability: Taking ownership of actions and maintaining ethical behavior. Ethics are critical in the safety profession. In fact, the Board of Certified Safety Professionals now requires an ethics course as part of recertification.
5. Respect: The George Washington quote shown above shows the need to treat others as we would want to be treated ourselves. The safety of those we work with can be supported by respecting all.
Whether or not you are an ASSP member, the CLEAR values can help guide you in your day to day actions. You can read more about them on ASSP's website at:
